What to Expect at a SwimWorld Free Trial

Quick answer: A SwimWorld free trial is a 30-minute lesson where your child joins a class and is observed by the instructor and deck supervisor. Afterwards, you are advised on the appropriate level and your child is placed in the right class for their ability. They can start regular lessons from the same week or the following. There is no obligation to enrol.

For families switching from another swim school or children returning after a break, SwimWorld offers a Skills Evaluation instead: a 15-minute 1-on-1 session with an instructor to determine ability and find the right class placement.

Most parents are not sure what to expect when they book a free trial at a swim school. Here is exactly how it works at SwimWorld, so you can walk in knowing what your child will do, what you need to bring, and what happens afterwards.

SwimWorld offers two ways to get started, depending on your child's experience.

A Free Trial is a 30-minute lesson where your child joins a class at their approximate level. The instructor and deck supervisor observe how they go in the water, assess their ability, and determine the right placement. This is for children who are new to swimming lessons, whether that is a baby, toddler, preschooler, school-aged child, or an adult.

A Skills Evaluation is a 15-minute 1-on-1 session where a certified instructor works with your child individually in the water to determine their ability and which class is the right fit. This is for children who have been swimming elsewhere and are switching to SwimWorld, or children returning after a break who need to be reassessed.

In both cases, the goal is the same. A child who gets placed in the wrong level either gets bored or gets overwhelmed. Both lead to the same outcome: they stop wanting to come. Getting the placement right from day one is how that is avoided.

What actually happens on the day

You arrive at reception. The team will greet you, show you where the change rooms are, and point you to the observation area where you can watch the session.

Your child gets changed and meets the deck supervisor, who will escort them poolside and introduce them to their instructor. The water is 32 degrees, heated year-round by 48 solar panels with gas backup. It is significantly warmer than any outdoor pool in Melbourne at any time of year. For most children, especially younger ones, the temperature is the first thing that puts them at ease.

For the next 30 minutes (or 15 minutes for a Skills Evaluation), the instructor works through a series of activities with your child. What those look like depends entirely on the age and experience of the child.

For a baby (from 4 months), you are in the water with them. The instructor guides you through supported holds, gentle movements, and early water familiarisation. It is parent-accompanied from start to finish, and remains so for all sessions until your child turns 3.

For a toddler or preschooler, the instructor is assessing water confidence, floating ability, breath control, willingness to put their face in, and how they respond to instructions in the water.

For a school-aged child, the assessment looks at stroke mechanics, breathing patterns, kicking technique, and comfort in deeper water. A child who has swum before will be assessed differently to one who has not.

There is no pass or fail. The instructor is simply working out where your child sits so they can be placed in a class that matches their ability. Not too easy, not too hard.

What happens after the session

The deck supervisor will speak with you about your child's level and where they have been placed. From there, the reception team will walk you through class availability, answer any questions, and can complete the booking process if you are ready to go ahead.

If there are spots available in the right class, your child can start that same week or the following week.

If you would prefer to go home and think about it first, that is fine too. There is no obligation.
